museums in Surrey - some are run by district and borough councils,
some by the Ministry of Defence, some by universities and some by
independent groups. All museums, and all museum visitors are served by
Surrey Museums Consultative Committee, a partnership between the County,
District and Borough councils.

Keogh Barracks, Ash Vale,
Aldershot Hampshire. GU12 5RQ
Depicts the history
of Army medicine from 1660. Includes medical equipment, uniforms, medals
and a collection of ambulances.
Ash Museum

The Basingstoke
Canal is declared by many to be Britain's most beautiful waterway. From
the rolling North Hampshire hills to the dramatic flights of locks in
Surrey, the tree lined canal offers a variety of delights. The canal is a
SSSI nature reserve, teeming with wildlife, while its 200-year old bridges
and locks hold a surprise around every corner. Add in the colourful sight
of traditional canal boats and you have a unique attraction all for free!
Bourne Hall Museum

The museum is run
by the Borough of Epsom and Ewell, and was set up to promote the
understanding of history in the area - a history which has many links with
the wider world. Henry VIII had a palace at Nonsuch, the well on Epsom
Common was the site of the first English Spa, and Epsom Downs have seen
two hundred years of the Derby, the most famous horse race in the world.
The museum has a hansom cab used by a Prime Minister, and a primitive fire
engine worked by teams of sweating volunteers. Collections of toys,
cameras, old costume and medical items will be of interest to anyone
looking back on the old days.

The world's first
banked motor racing track and assorted buildings, period racing cars,
accessories and memorabilia. Aircraft collection spanning 85 years, first
flight ticket office.

Documents relating to Byfleets' history and displays are housed in the
library.
Chertsey Museum

Local history

Chobham Museum

Museum of Farnham

A local history
museum interpreting the story of Farnham through a variety of display
techniques. Housed in a Grade I listed town house built in 1718.

More than Fire Engines! This museum houses photographs, costumes, and
objects illustrating the work of Fire Officers.

Guildford
Museum Castle Arch, Quarry Street, Guildford Surrey. GU1 3SX
The largest
collection of archaeology, local history and needlework in Surrey.
Displays include local characters such as Lewis Carroll and Gertrude
Jekyll.
John Russell
R.A. oils and
pastels (Guildford born artist), contemporary craftwork, historical and
modern paintings, drawings and prints. Changing temporary exhibitions of
local artists and touring exhibitions. |
