Explore HMS Victory and The Mary Rose.

Great Family Days Out in Portsmouth Hampshire.

HMS Warrior 1860 at The Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

HMS Warrior 1860 was launched during a period of uneasy peace between Britain and her traditional enemy, France. During her heyday she was the most formidable warship the world has ever seen. Today she looks just as she did at the time of her first commission (1861 - 1864).

Bigger, faster and more heavily armed than any other warship afloat, HMS Warrior was the world's first iron hulled armoured battleship. She was powered by steam as well as sail and constructed of wrought iron. Almost overnight, Warrior had made every other warship obsolete.

Step Aboard
When you step aboard HMS Warrior 1860 you will catch a glimpse of life in a 19th century warship - as though the crew had gone ashore leaving everything ready for inspection.

Follow the drama of Lord Nelson pacing the deck as battle commenced, of his fatal wounding and his death at the moment of victory. Discover how HMS Victory is being restored to her original condition prior to the Battle of Trafalgar, the bicentennial of which will be commemorated in 2005.

Mary Rose - Portsmouth Historic DockyardMary Rose at The Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

Mary Rose, built between 1510-1511, lost in 1545. For many years, Mary Rose was Henry VIII's favourite warship, fast and successful. And yet she sank - on a fine summer day as she sailed into action against the French fleet.

Amateur divers found the site and began the world's largest underwater excavation. Millions watched on television in October 1982, as she was raised to the surface and brought safely back to her home port to begin the long process of conservation.

The treasures of Mary Rose
Come and see this extraordinary shipwreck being treated with polyethylene glycol - a water based wax solution - to preserve it for all time.

Visit the museum and marvel not only at the cannon, longbows, gold and coins, but also at wooden bowls, tankards and game boards that belonged to the ordinary soldiers and sailors on board.

Over 1,200 objects are on display, miraculously preserved by the fine silts beneath the Solent. Together they present a unique picture of the men of Mary Rose and the ship in which they lived, fought and died.
